FAVE 4 OF THE WEEK:
He Needs Me – Nina Simone
Nina, a true virtuouso, paints the coral blue and green to the deepest hues of the ocean with
her voice, precious like the pearls and behind each melody of her songs she whispers to you like
the currents washing up onto the shore. She makes you want to stay for more. This song
stretches time and carefully rests you down inside it to be wrapped by the blanket of her nostalgic tone and innocently sweet piano. She’s a queen within the realm of jazz, being able to sing a ballad so raw and piteous like this one, to a playground chant, a proclamation of true love in My Baby Just Cares for Me. She has full authority. Those high tone places that she talks
about? You don’t care as much about them as you do care about hearing her describe them; a
sudden pause and a low murmur that captivates you none the less; Nina plays a game and she
makes the rules herself. Although she reaches a surge of power in her voice in an anthem such
as Feeling Good, she has the same impact of entrancing you throughout her range.

Casket Pretty – Noname
Reality Check - Noname
The laidback chill best friend that you sit back with and watch shooting stars. She paints her
songs with life’s colours. The voice is an instrument, her songs are gracefully your companions,
her tracks are built on organs and bells taking you to a higher place, loops that you can rely on
to enjoy for their complexity but lightness. Each track on her album Telefone has a glow. She
collaborates often with other rappers that compliment her own fresh lyricism.
Real Wild Child – Joan Jett & The Blackhearts
A rock’n’roll legend, a bullet of rebellion and individualism, a real wild child, Joan Jett is a must-
listen-to artist when listening to powerful women in music, particularly in the genre of rock.
Known mostly for her hit I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll and Bad Reputation, she’s a promise and a burning
fire of youthful spirit. Her tunes are blunt and fruitful simultaneously, blasting a rush of
electricity through you as you listen and get energized by her
Ahwak – Fairuz
Nassam Aleina El Hawa - Fairuz
From classics such as Bint el Shalabiya, to a tango in Laure’s Lover and Nahna wel Amar Jiran or a bossa nova for Ya Tair, to a patient and warm tune to nurture you such as Kifak Inta. Fairuz’s
voice is as expressive as dusk, dawn, midday, and all the constellations that appear at midnight. The 1960’s as you know it may have been a time of rock ‘n’ roll, but in Lebanon, it was the Golden Age of culture and one of the foundations for the country’s artistic identity. Nouhad Haddad who adopted the alias, Fairuz, the name of a precious stone, is loved by all, for her swirling and stunning voice expresses her own love for all. She sings of lovers, being both
people and places (see: Le Beirut). An emblem of hope, charm, and the luxury of art that she shares with all, Fairuz’s music provides cultural anthems of pride and joy.
