OUR NAME
Ambiguous means unclear or more than one meaning. The female population within the arts community minuscule. It is hard for our voices to be heard when they are constantly being overpowered by the majority of the arts community. Â Our voices may seem unclear considering we take up 7% of the film industry. Major art galleries in the world only show up to 27% of work done by female artists although 51% of the visual art community is female. 30% of executive roles in the music industry are occupied by women. 17% of journalists authors are female. 79% of that 17% are white. Asians,Native Hawaiians,Pacific Islanders make up 7.2% of staff, Hispanics, Latinos, Mexicans make up 5.5%, and black, African Americans 3.5%. However, women are strong. Although we take up a small fraction of a large pie, we are equally, if not more empowering. Amazon means, a member of a legendary race of female warriors. And that is exactly what female artists are. Although our voices may seem ambiguous, they are coming from the mouths of legendary female warriors. By putting the two words together, Ambiguous Amazons reminds us all that our voices are worth hearing, our art is worth sharing, and our lives are worth celebrating.
